| On Track June 2016 Nigel Pittaway, AIR International "Nigel Pittaway reports on the current status of the Australian F-35 programme... ...The Final Word To conclude the briefing, Lt General Bogdan took some time to address what he called the misconceptions and inaccuracies regarding the F-35’s performance. He said: “The critics of the programme and those who propose to do other things besides what we’re doing right now have no data to base their opinions on. I have the data; I have the pilots flying the airplane and you can go and ask them. Here’s what I will tell you: there is not an airplane in the world today – anywhere – that, if put up against an F-35 in an air-to-air environment, we would not see them first, shoot them first and kill them first. Period. Dot.” Two Page PDF attached. |

| International Partnerships Flourish on America during DT-III JSF PR 21 Nov 2016 “...In addition to the U.K.'s team, Australian service members integrated with various departments from the America and F-35 team. "We were integrated into the test program to put these aircraft and all three variants through their paces," said Royal Australian air force Sgt. Justin Kelly. "It's not often that all the nations will get together and basically develop an aircraft or request an aircraft to meet certain specifications. There is now an opportunity to share a lot of things. It's very rewarding."...” http://www.jsf.mil/news/docs/20161121_International_Partnerships_Flourish.pdf (119Kb) |

| Centre fuselages for next RAAF F-35s in production 31 Jan 2017 Gerard Frawley "No fewer than six centre fuselage sections for the RAAF’s next batch of F-35A Joint Strike Fighters are currently in production at Northrop Grumman’s F-35 Integrated Assembly Line (IAL) at Palmdale, California. The fuselage sections are for six of the RAAF’s next eight F-35As, which are scheduled for delivery in 2018, after the first two Australian jets (AU-1 and AU-2) were handed over in 2014. “We’ve currently delivered two aircraft to the Australian air force, we have six aircraft that are [currently] in our assembly process, [and] we’ll actually deliver seven this year,” Corey Carruth, the F-35 IAL’s director of manufacturing, told Australian media during a tour of the Palmdale facility earlier this month. “One of the next units we’ll deliver off our assembly line is AU-3, the third Australian unit, we’ll deliver it to Lockheed Martin in March.” Following the delivery of the centre fuselage of AU-3 in late March, AU-4 and 5 will follow shortly after in April, Carruth said. The next eight Australian jets are being built as part of the F-35’s low rate initial production (LRIP) batch 10.... ...Northrop Grumman delivered the first RAAF F-35 centre fuselage for AU-1 in October 2013. AU-1 and AU-2 have been based at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona since late 2014 as part of the International Pilot Training Center there. Of the next eight jets, two will ferry to Australia in 2018 for Australian operational test and evaluation, while the other six will be based at Luke for pilot training before being ferrying to Australia in 2020." http://australianaviation.com.au/2017/01/centre-fuselages-for-next-raaf-f-35s-in-production/ |

| Number 4 with that 2OCU tail is airborne in Texas. Very nice picture. Also interesting to note that the Israeli Air Force has declared their first squadron of F-35A's operational. They're probably the most combat ready AF in the World. http://www.janes.com/article/76204/israel-declares-f-35-to-be-operational
|

| It was interesting to me to know that the first F-35As to travel to Oz to be based here (arriving 10 Dec 2018 at RAAF Williamtown) transited HICKAM AFB to RAAF Amberley in nine hours with RAAF KC-30s (so I'm presuming more than one tanker). Yeah yeah yeah good oh - just over 4,000 nm. Meanwhile researching 'long flights' came across this gem (attached below) from WINGS magazine WINTER 2017 edition PDF (includes info about F-35s & RAAF). "...The first two RAAF Hornet aircraft flew from Lemoore NAS to Williamtown in 1985, non-stop, a distance of about 6,500 n miles, and air refuelled 15 times...." |

| Hahah :-) My experience over water? HEAPS. However I had the luxury of an 'airfield' that followed me where ever I went - mostly. One time some 400+ Nm south of the big island HAWAII after a CAP/BARCAP practice sortie at high altitude I was directed to circle overhead because my 'CHARLIE' time (time to the minute for me to arrest back onboard HMAS Melbourne) was delayed because of an arrestor gear problem. UhHUH. Nothing else was possible - not enough fuel to get to HAWAII so just waited it out to thankfully get back onboard after about one hour. Luckily I was still at altitude when given the initial news so circling at approx. 35,000 feet the A4G was making fuel at best endurance IAS. Two ANG Delta Dagger F-102As rocketed by me from my SIX - I can't see back there (with no warning from ship - they were out to lunch). I nearly fell out of my perch from the turbulence. :-) Must have been close to the ADIZ. With only four A4Gs onboard then we had no buddy tanker available nor did we have the gear for it for that cruise to Hawaii for the first RIMPAC 1971. Later when eight A4Gs onboard I believe there was often a buddy tanker on deck ready to go if needed. Of course that proved useful when in 1978 an A4G lost a main wheel on deck so the tanker was launched providing fuel for the trek to AMBERLEY where 887 did an OK wheels up slide on empty drop tanks on foam. Aircraft fixed to be flown back to Nowra the next day. Otherwise I never made the long trek to PEARCE in an A4G in my time - often the return would be non-stop with the favourable West to East Jetstream. Back on 10 Nov 1970 a pair of VF-805 A4Gs crossed from NAS Nowra to arrest onboard HMAS Melbourne just off the coast near Perth WA. Took about five hours with an air refueling TA4G out of EDINBURGH providing fuel at rendezvous. After my time VF-805 crossed the ditch to OHAKEA several times. Also the squadron flew to PENANG in the late 1970s for exercises (without carrier). The Kiwis had to fly a long way to get anywhere in their A-4Ks so they have heaps of experience for long over water flights - unlike our ride alongs. |

| A35-011 & -012 arrived at Willytown on 07 April. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has added two more F-35A to its locally-based fleet of Joint Strike Fighters at RAAF Williamtown. The arrival of A35-011 and A35-012 on April 7 brings the total number of F-35As in Australia to four. The pair joins A35-009 and A35-010, which were ferried from Luke Air Force Base (AFB) in Arizona in December 2018. The latest ferry was supported by an RAAF KC-30A tanker, and was routed from Luke AFB via Hickam AFB in Hawaii. Note: Different ferry route https://australianaviation.com.au/2019/04/raaf-base-williamtown-receives-third-and-fourth-f-35a/ |

| From Air Forces Monthly SEVEN MORE F-35As arrived at RAAF Base Williamtown, New South Wales, on December 11, bringing the locally stationed Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) fleet to 13 aircraft. The aircraft departed Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, and travelled to their new home with tanker support via Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam, Hawaii, and Anderson AFB, Guam. As well as the 13 Joint Strike Fighters assigned to No 3 Squadron at Williamtown, another five Australian aircraft are based at Luke for international pilot training. The additional jets mean that No 2 Operational Conversion Unit can begin a first Operational Conversion Course (OPCON) on the type, scheduled for late 2020/early 2021. The Australian government recently approved the purchase of the next 24 aircraft – meaning all 72 Australian F-35As in the current programme of record are secure. The defence ministry will receive 45 Lightning IIs under the international Block Buy Contract, valued at a total of US$34bn. Ultimately, Australia has a stated requirement for 100 aircraft. |
