Navy Issues Boeing $1.49B P-8A Contract Includes Australia’s First 4 Planes, 9 for U.S. 28 Aug 2015 Megan Eckstein
QUOTE
"The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) formally bought its first four P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft in a $1.49-billion contract with Boeing that also includes the U.S. Navy’s next nine aircraft, Boeing announced today.

Australia’s participation in the program goes back to 2009, and though it has recently procured a complete training system and signed a contract for long-lead materials, it had not formally signed a contract for its aircraft.

The RAAF announced in February 2014 it intends to buy eight P-8As to replace its AP-3C Orions, and could buy as many as 12 pending the outcome of a Defence White Paper review. It said the first aircraft would deliver in 2017 and the full 8-plane fleet would be operational by 2021.

The contract announced today keeps ahead of that schedule, with Boeing saying that “production of the first Australian P-8A will begin later this year, with delivery to the RAAF scheduled for 2016.”

“By working together since the early stages of P-8A development, the U.S. and Australia have created one airplane configuration that serves the needs of both countries,” Capt. Scott Dillon, U.S. Navy P-8 program manager, said in the Navy statement. “The U.S. and Australian P-8As will be able to operate with each other effectively and affordably for decades to come.”

In 2009 Australia signed a series of memoranda of understanding to work on the U.S. Navy on a single system that would meet both countries’ needs for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. India also bought into the program, and Boeing has delivered six of the eight P-8I variant aircraft ordered in a 2009 contract.

For the U.S. Navy, this most recent contract provides nine more P-8As in the second full-rate production lot, bringing the Navy’s total buy to 62, with 28 delivered so far. The service will eventually buy 117 total."

I hear that 10 and 11 Sqn will remain current to operate these aircraft on a two Sqn Basis, but with more crews/A/c ratio. Given the reliability, makes sense. Mind you, whether 292 Sqn will be able to lean off the eight a/c, is another question that begs an answer. Maybe Sims only.

Still, 6 to 8 P-8As can't be all over the place at the same time, so the additional 4 will in all likelihood be ordered, to allow off shore temporary basing and operations in the ME's war on Pirates, overland ISR and maybe ISIL waterborne forces.

We must remember that Surface surveillance role can be now handled by No 2 Sqn E-7s also and the forthcoming No 9 Sqn MR (Sic)Triton "Seagull MkVI MQ" UAVs.

But we must then remember,...only the P-8A carries any offensive or ASR ordinance, at this stage of the game.

Spirit gets to work on RAAF’s first P-8A 23 November, 2015 Greg Waldron

"Major assembly has started on the Royal Australian Air Force’s first Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft at Spirit Aerosystems.

Boeing unit Spirit produces the fuselage for the 737 airliner, upon which the P-8A is based on. In a statement, it says that the first RAAF P-8A fuselage will be delivered to Boeing’s Renton, Washington assembly line in early 2016.

"Our new P-8 will be the first of a new generation of maritime surveillance for Australia,” says RAAF Air Cdr Adam Brown on a visit to Spirit’s Wichita factory. “We're particularly excited and proud to get what we think is the best maritime patrol aircraft in the world coming to service in our air force," said RAAF Air Commodore Adam Brown.”

Canberra has ordered eight P-8A aircraft, and has options for four additional examples. It’s first examples are due for delivery in 2017.

The type will replace the RAAF’s fleet of Lockheed Martin P-3 aircraft. Flightglobal’s Fleets Analyzer shows that the RAAF operates 15 P-3Cs, the average age of which is 33.5 years.

Canberra also intends to obtain the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton unmanned air vehicle to complement the new type."

20 More P-8s for US, Australia Ordered From Boeing 29 Jan 2016 Christopher P. Cavas

"WASHINGTON — The Boeing Company received a hefty $2.5 billion contract award from the US Navy to provide that service with 16 more P-8A Poseidon maritime multi-mission aircraft, along with four P-8As for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), the Pentagon announced Thursday.

The P-8A is replacing elderly P-3C Orion aircraft in US Navy service, and AP-3C Orions flying for Australia.

All 20 aircraft in this latest order are Lot III full-rate production aircraft. The award is a modification to a previously awarded fixed-price-incentive-firm contract from the US Navy.

The award includes the second batch of four Poseidons for the RAAF. Australia is the second international partner for the P-8A, and agreed in 2014 to buy eight Poseidons, with an option for four more. A decision on the four option aircraft is to be part of the country’s new Defence White Paper, due this year.

India already is operating the aircraft, known as the P-8I Neptune, and Britain recently announced its intention to buy nine P-8As to restore its aerial maritime surveillance and anti-submarine capabilities, lost when the UK cancelled the Nimrod program in 2010.

RAAF personnel already are at US Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, where they began training a year ago to operate the P-8A. And in Kansas, Spirit AeroSystems announced it began production of the first fuselage for an Australian Poseidon in October.

The Australian program is estimated to cost about Australian $4 billion (US $2.15 billion), including infrastructure and facilities upgrades. The first RAAF P-8A is expected to be delivered in 2017
.

Boeing, naturally, is pleased with the award.

“We continue to hear feedback from our US Navy customer about the incredible capabilities of the P-8A,” James Dodd, Boeing vice president and program manager of P-8 Programs, said Thursday evening in a statement. “The deployed squadrons tell us it’s exceeding expectations. We’re looking forward to providing even more capability to the fleet and to Australia.”

The award follows a $1.49 billion August contract for P-8As, which included the first four Australian aircraft along with nine for the US."

Latest update in the Defence white paper -

7 additional P-8's on top of the 8 already confirmed.

Also 7 Tritons.

The white paper reveals the government will also significantly boost its maritime surveillance capabilities, buying an additional seven P-8 surveillance planes on top of the eight already announced, and purchasing seven Triton surveillance drones.

Two Trances,..four (already optioned) and then three by 2020

One missed thing,..a possible further two KC-30As to make Nine!!

"Consideration will be given to a follow-on acquisition of further air-to-air refuellers, to take the refueller fleet to nine aircraft, to support new aircraft types such as the P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft." Page 96

Minister for Defence – 2016 Royal Australian Air Force Air Power Conference – National Convention Centre, ACT 15 March 2016

2016 Royal Australian Air Force Air Power Conference – National Convention Centre, ACT Tuesday, 15 March 2016

Subjects: Defence White Paper, Defence capability, counter-Daesh campaign, ADF diversity E&OE.

"...Over the next two decades Air Force will also be equipped with new and more capable platforms to patrol and respond on Australia’s vast maritime approaches. As foreshadowed in the White Paper, I can indicate today that the Government has approved the acquisition of four additional P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance and response aircraft, bringing the total number of P-8As on order to 12. The Government is also considering the acquisition of seven MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft systems. These two platforms will replace the ageing AP-3C Orion aircraft, giving Australia a greater maritime intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and response capacity.

The first of the Poseidons is expected to be delivered late this year and 12 aircraft will be in service by 2022. Pending government approval a further three aircraft are planned to enter service late in the 2020s and the Triton is planned to be introduced into service in 2023. While the Orion fleet has performed exceptionally on operations throughout its distinguished service, the last of these aircraft will be almost 40 years old when they retire from service...."

I wonder how long the large serials will last in service before the P8As become anonymous ?

Thanks Demon,

I'm sure that the serials will tone down/disappear once the aircraft have worked up to FOC for all missions.

Less said on this topic the better I suspect.

Excerpts from a report in Aust. Aviation.

First flight for RAAF’s first P-8A Poseidon

The first Boeing P-8A Poseidon for the RAAF has made its first flight, completing the short hop from Renton, where it was built, to Boeing Field where its mission systems equipment is being installed, on May 6.

The aircraft, wearing 11 Squadron RAAF markings and the temporary US registration N940DS, took off from Renton at 1:31pm local time, landing at Boeing Field 1hr 53min later, flight tracking website Flightaware shows.

It is due to be ferried to Australia “in late 2016 following post-production checks and acceptance”, Defence said in a statement on May 24.

P-8s are built on a separate final assembly line at Boeing’s Renton facility in Washington State, where all 737s and their variants are assembled, before they are ferried to nearby Boeing Field, Seattle for mission systems fit-out.

$2.2 Billion Boeing Contract Funds P-8 Aircraft for U.S., Australia and U.K. 03 Apr 2017
QUOTE
"SEATTLE — Boeing, the U.S. Navy, the Royal Australian Air Force and the U.K. Royal Air Force will continue modernizing global maritime patrol capabilities through a $2.2 billion contract awarded March 30 for at least 17 P-8A Poseidon aircraft, the company announced in an April 3 release.

The agreement also includes options for 32 additional aircraft, as well as money for long-lead parts for future orders. After exercising all options, the total contract value will be $6.8 billion. This comprehensive award reflects a commitment by Boeing and the Navy to achieve pricing and production stability, two keys of successful program performance.

“The P-8A is a textbook example of Boeing’s commercial derivative expertise,” said Jamie Burgess, vice president of Boeing Military Aircraft’s Mobility, Surveillance & Engagement division and the P-8 program manager. “Every day our customers get to fly incredible aircraft that perform exceptionally well and are built by the best of Boeing.”

The Navy will receive 11 aircraft, while Australia will expand its P-8A fleet with four more. The U.K.’s first two P-8A jets are part of the agreement, with first delivery set for 2019.

Boeing so far has delivered 53 Poseidons to the Navy and two to the Royal Australian Air Force...."

This is a LLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNG story:

DCMA Boeing Seattle delivers international success 14 Feb 2018
QUOTE
"RAAF BASE EDINBURGH ADELAIDE, Australia, Feb. 14, 2018 — Defense Contract Management Agency Boeing Seattle team members traveled more than 9,400 miles to deliver a P-8A Poseidon aircraft to the Royal Australian Air Force Jan. 12.

It was the contracting office’s first foreign military aircraft international direct delivery under the cooperative Poseidon program. DCMA’s five-member team paired with six RAAF maintainers on a journey that began in Seattle and ended at RAAF’s 11 Squadron here.

Although this was the sixth P-8A delivered to Australia, it was the first involving international travel. RAAF’s 11 Squadron previously conducted aircraft receipt inspections at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, and then ferried each P-8A from the air station to its Edinburgh base...."

Thanks Phil
Although I must say "It's a bloody airliner!"
Why are Boeing making such a song and dance about it flying overseas?
I thought that is what it was designed and built to do.

Our aircraft are not purchased from Boeing. They are purchased as an FMS and this is US Govt controlled...we are buying through the US Navy as part of their order. India could not do this. FMS gives us US Govt pricing too..

From Air Forces Monthly

THE LATEST P-8A on order for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) arrived at RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia, on December 12, completing the fleet
for the resident No 11 Squadron. Following the arrival of the 12th Poseidon – A47-012 (c/n 64168, line number 7603) – the country’s Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds said: “The P-8A is already providing significant operational support to Australia, including a recent mission to the Middle East Region on Operation Manitou as part of the International Maritime Security Construct.”

The first P-8A for the RAAF arrived in Canberra on November 16, 2016. The penultimate aircraft from the current order, A47-011 (c/n 64167, line number 7427), was delivered to RAAF Base Edinburgh last October 4. Purchase of an additional three Poseidons is planned, as announced in the Defence White Paper on February 26, 2016, but no contract has yet been awarded.

Between them, the P-8A and the MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft system (UAS) will replace the service’s AP-3C Orion fleet. The AP-3C is in the process of a graduated drawdown, with the final aircraft planned for withdrawal in 2023.
