I thought I would start a new thread for C-130 nose art as the new art work shows it is no longer confined to just C-130H's (but to see the original post go here http://www.adf-messageboard.com.au/invboard/index.php?showtopic=863) as new art work is now being applied to J models as well.

Recently, I sought permission to take photographs of the new artwork that now adorns some of the returning aircraft however I am in the process of getting them cleared for posting here and will have them up soon. Stay tuned.

Good luck with posting them on this forum. Does that work now? Just asking.

No - posting pics not working - just tried again now.

I have seen A97-441 with "Ice Qeen" nose art at Edinburgh recently, that is the first J model I've seen though.

That's correct Rod. "Ice Queen" is a new one and I don't have a photo of it yet. However, there is more to it. When I saw it several days ago it looks as though it reads as " Ice Queen Rudy" although Rudy may have been a "add-on" afterwards. I will have to check on this one.

So far I have seen the following J models:

A97-440 "Longer H en Faster"

A97-441 "Ice Queen"

A97-465 "Combat Dolphin". This aircraft does not feature any titles or text for the artwork as it features the drawing alone

Here is an update for the H models.

A97-001 - "20,000 Hours"

A97-002 - "Desert Runner"

A97-003 - "Desert Dilemma"

A97-004 - "Rain Maker"

A97-005 - "Cherry" This artwork is very subdued. Obtaining a good photo that shows the full art was extremely difficult

A97-006 - "Miss Behavin" now reads "Miss Behavin' in Vegas" after the aircraft deployed to Nevada in support of the F-111's at Red Flag.

A97-007 - "Licenced To Deliver"

A97-008 - "You sent us to Arabia". This aircraft has been re-painted in the two tone gray and no longer has this art work. Currently has 50th Anniversary C-130 tail art.

A97-009 - "Just another Cowboy" This aircraft has been re-painted in the two tone gray and no longer has this art work. Now called "Vegas Vixen". This artwork is surely the most stunning to date as it is reminiscent of the artwork put on WWII aircraft and extremely well drawn.

A97-010 - "Stallion Express"

A97-011 - "Snake Eyes" (previously Stallions Lady). This aircraft has been re-painted in the two tone gray and no longer has this art work.

A97-012 - "126 Spins...just"

Dean, I am posting a pic of Ice Queen here. Youare correct, there is something that I also thought was Rudy above the panel next to the crew door.
For Darren this will also test the upload function.

From what I understand "Miss Behavin" was named because the aircraft because the aircraft had a higher than normal unserviceability rate.

"Rainmaker" was so named because it rained the day of its arrival in a place where not much rain falls (tic).

"Cherry" I would expect to have been flown by a relatively recently operationally ready crew but that is only a guess.

The detail in "Vegas Vixen" is absolutely amazing and it shows just how good the member is who drew her.

Here's an update on A97-440. Though it appears to read as "Longer H en Faster" I've always believed that "en" looked more like "er" but it never made any sense to me why someone would write.

It has been all but confirmed that what was written originally was "Longer Harder Faster". However it obviously was deemed too inappropriate due to the character straddling an aircraft.

So the caption on A97-440 is in actuality "Longer Harder Faster"

One week after it was used for the repatriation of the missing airmen C-130 A-97-006 "Miss BeHavin In Vegas" has had its artwork removed. I'm not sure as yet as to the reason but am curious to know if this will affect the rest of the fleet that still carries artwork.

Personally I would be disappointed if it was removed because someone thought it was inappropriate. However that would be because that means they would have only just seen the image and not the artwork itself. That's like not being able to see the forest through the trees.

Dean, saw the artwork on TV and wondered if there would be a reaction. I guess next we will have to have a funerary Herk painted black? With blacked out windows? Military aircraft are what they are and anything to do with civilian sensitivities will never be reconciled IMHO. Geez next will will not show weapons at airshows because someone may be offended? I guess the F-111 was not 'life extended' because the airshow fuel dump AND BURN! was not politically correct. I'm joking OK. :D

Well, I found out yesterday that other nose art WILL be disappearing too.

Obviously, someone found the image of Jessica Rabbit offensive so that means the brilliant artwork of "Vegas Vixen" will also be removed.

Apparently the 2SQN Association members at the repatriation ceremony were pleased to see the nose art but in a crowd of around 500 there was 1 prude.

It will be a shame to lose these artworks for this reason but I guess they would of had to go sooner or later. I just wish it was later.

Yes what a shame about the art work going. It is a pity that 1 in 500 can dictate the outcome - not very democratic.

This is a previously unknown piece or nose art on A97-009 called "Desert Rat" that I just found. The image was found in the 2006 Air Force Annual but has been cropped due to the members face being shown in the original image. The image is an official Defence image but I'm sure they won't mind.

It's Great to nose art make an appearance,it creates esprit de corps and a morale booster.

Its also a shame to see it go, just because someone found it offensive, but thanks for showing it.

Hi all. It's been very quiet on the nose art front but I am pleased to say that I have just spied some new art work.

A97-467 has now been christened SANDMAN in large stylised letters reminiscent of the Holden panel van from the 70's.

Talk about retro. No shaggin' in the back of this wagon though.

A97-467 "Sandman"
A97-4?? "High Maintenance"

Removed
A97-001 - "20,000 Hours"
A97-002 - "Desert Runner"
A97-003 - "Desert Dilemma"
A97-006 - "Miss Behavin in Vegas"
A97-008 - "You sent us to Arabia".
A97-009 - "Vegas Vixen" previously "Just another Cowboy" and "Desert Rat"
A97-010 - "Stallion Express"
A97-011 - "Snake Eyes" previously "Stallions Lady"

Does anyone know what has happened to C-130E A97-167? It seems to have disapeared. I hope it hasn't been given the chop and moved to 285 Sqns hangar :(

I did most of my para course on this aircraft. It was also the last E model on which I flew a dispatch sortie (funnily enough a 36 Sqn TAC Cse).

G'day Rockdropper,
Ol' 67 has had it's wings "clipped" and is in the same hangar with the other 2 C-130E airframes and it's wings now sit on the floor of the large hangar.

The two Caribous that had been used for many years have been pushed out since Caribous are no longer in service and training on them is now redundant.

Yep, I noticed the 'Bous outside 176. What a waste of an E :( . I was hoping it might be saved. With the steady decline of Richmond over the last few years (and no doubt likely to continue) it would make a good location for a museum IMHO. I hope thay save at least one complete H and a 707.

Thanks for the update.

There's a good chance we will save a H model but don't hold your breath for a 707. They are being sold to Omega (apparently) in the US to provide air to air refuelling support for the US armed forces.

But the aircraft have been sitting idle since July 08 and after two years they still don't look like they are going anywhere soon.

It needs to be understood that it is at least a directive, that one of each type of airplane is to be saved within the RAAF Museum collection. So a H model will gp to Point Cook.

Bearing in mind that the A model is suffering badly from exposure a decision will have to be made on how to preserve it. The E model being mothballed and sealed will be OK.

My understanding is that after the debarcle of having to import aircraft so we could have a sample (even though it was not the real thing) Malcolm said that at least one sample was to be retained and onto museum strength.

So old 167 will continue on as a load trainer proberly even after the H model has gone.

Regards

That is a shame about the A model. I suppose if you are going to preserve aircraft at PC they need to be under cover. I imagine the corrosion problems there are enormous. I would like to see more than one airframe preserved.

The 707 sale has fallen through due to problems with spare parts, I am told. They are currnelt growing moss and rapidly deteriorating on the western apron :( .

I have some pics of a full walk around on all three 707's at RIC from about four weeks ago. Moss and other bits and pieces are starting to grow, particuarly on 623(?) closest to 176. Corrosion also looks like its going to be a bit of a problem. You can tell they haven't been cared for at all, or at least, very minimaly while in storage. If anyone wants me to throw the picks up let me know.
