Did not have time to look if the old thread about the F-111 crash on takeoff (water into engine) in 1979 at OHAKEA still exists. Anyway it came to my attention today that the pilot later deck landed an S-2 aboard HMAS Melbourne - I gather he was on exchange (with a RAAF navigator acting in another crew as a TACCHO/Observer I guess)? “A8-137 D1-13 F-111C Crashed after water ingestion into engines during take-off. Crew ejected in escape module on Rwy 27 at 90 kts with only minor injuries, 24/08/79 near Ohakea New Zealand (1 Sqn). RAAF Ejection number 55. Both Crew, FLGOFF (P) M. Kelly, FLTLT (N) A. Curr survived ejection. Accident caused by water being ingested into air intakes. Tyre chine's were modified to F-111’s so it wouldn't happen again.”
